LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

The Bloopers: Apple's chatting with big-shot publishers like Condé Nast and NBC News. They’re discussing potential multiyear deals worth at least $50 million. The tech giant aims to license news archives from these publishers to enhance its generative AI systems.

The Details:

  • Apple is negotiating multiyear deals, estimated at a minimum of $50 million, with prominent news publishers.

  • The discussions involve licensing news archives to support the training of Apple's generative AI systems.

  • Publishers, such as Condé Nast, NBC News, and IAC, have received mixed responses to Apple's proposals.

  • Concerns have been raised about potential legal liabilities for publishers arising from Apple's use of their content.

  • Apple's plans for integrating news archives into its generative AI systems remain somewhat vague, contributing to varied reactions from news executives.

  • Apple, Condé Nast, NBC News, and IAC have not provided immediate comments on the ongoing negotiations.

  • Apple's recent focus on artificial intelligence includes significant investments, reportedly spending "millions of dollars a day" on AI-related endeavours.

  • The company has released a machine learning framework optimised for Apple Silicon and is actively working on improving Siri and introducing AI-focused features in upcoming iOS releases.

My Thoughts: While Apple has seemingly lagged behind in the AI race, innovative research like this shows the tech giant is quietly preparing to make waves. If (or when) Apple integrates advanced AI tech into the iPhone — it could be another 0 to 1 moment for adoption and demand. Will we finally see a major change in the next iPhone 16 or 17?

Just as I am about to publish this I found a new post on Twitter (X) showing Apple’s new Open Source AI model “Ferret” which was introduced back in October?!

The Bloopers: OpenAI's making headlines with early talks of a hefty funding round, aiming for a valuation above $100 billion. The deal's still in the works, with terms and timing yet to be finalized. There's also some chatter about a chip venture with G42 in Abu Dhabi.

The Details:

  • OpenAI is in the early stages of a funding round targeting a valuation of over $100 billion, as reported by Bloomberg News.

  • The specifics of the funding deal, its valuation, and the timing are yet to be nailed down, leaving room for adjustments.

  • Discussions are underway for a new chip venture with Abu Dhabi-based G42, aiming to secure between $8 billion and $10 billion.

  • A separate tender offer, led by Thrive Capital, is on the horizon for early January. This offer allows employees to sell shares at a valuation of $86 billion.

  • Microsoft has committed to investing over $10 billion in OpenAI. The partnership began with the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, sparking a surge in OpenAI's valuation.

  • The introduction of ChatGPT, a chatbot generating human-like responses, played a pivotal role in boosting OpenAI's popularity and valuation. A previous share sale hit $300 million at a $30 billion valuation.

  • In late November, CEO Sam Altman faced an unexplained ousting, causing concern among investors and employees. He was swiftly reinstated four days later, accompanied by the promise of a new board.

My Thoughts: OpenAI's latest financial maneuvers hint at a silent revolution in the making. With substantial funding, potential chip ventures, and Microsoft's backing, it feels like a turning point for OpenAI. Let’s wait to see what 2024 brings for the company.

The Bloopers: The New York Times takes legal action, suing OpenAI and Microsoft for alleged copyright infringement, claiming the companies utilized millions of its articles to train their AI models, directly competing with its content.

The Details:

  • The lawsuit alleges that OpenAI and Microsoft's large language models (LLMs) can generate content that mimics the Times' style, undermining its relationship with readers and impacting revenue streams.

  • The complaint argues that these AI models jeopardize high-quality journalism by hindering news outlets' ability to protect and monetize their content.

  • The Times seeks "billions of dollars in statutory and actual damages," demanding OpenAI and Microsoft be held liable for copyright infringement and requesting a court order preventing the use of its content in AI model training.

My Thoughts: The New York Times is throwing down a big fight against OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging they've crossed the copyright line in AI development. This legal tussle opens up questions about the intersection of media, AI, and intellectual property. Negotiations are happening, and while it's complex, I'm keen to see how this will influence future tech such as how and what AI chatbots will be able to train themselves on.
